    Day of Birth

    04:45

She had taken the day off work but forgot to turn off her usual alarm. All hopes of a lie-in were demolished. She was not ready to turn 29. “Let’s call the whole thing off.”

    05:22

She wondered if the ravens knew that their continuous cawing is the most consistent, reliable thing in her life.

    05:23

A murder of crows. An ostentation of peacocks. A parliament of owls. She had no collective. She just was.

    06:42

She buried her phone under her mattress so she didn’t have to face life just yet. She began to read The Glass Bead Game for the fourth time. And for the fourth time she didn’t make it past page 28. Having said that, she hadn’t expected to make it past year 28, but she’s only bloody gone and done it.

  • Making art isn’t always some spiritually awaking experience with sparks flying out of your fingers and your eyes glowing with crazed inspiration. Sometimes you wake up and nothing comes. Some days you don’t feel like it. So you look for ideas.

The following set was an impromptu experiment where I intentionally took photos out of focus (this is something I’ve seen done by other photographers). It was a challenge. How do you look through the viewfinder and not focus? But I figured out that that was kind of the point. I had to relax my gaze and began to notice the relationship between shapes and lights. If anything, this was an exercise in “seeing” differently when looking through the camera. Have you ever tried this? What experiments have you done?

  • I continue to play with the tone of lights in curves and edges, get lost in shadows and elements that are out of focus, and lavish in the spectrum of shade and saturation in one color. Here is one quick study of a plant I saw in a store window.

  • I’ve had a collection of work up at Fresh Flours Bakery on Phinney Ridge focusing on abstract and travel photography. They’re up through the end of this month, so if you haven’t already, grab a cuppa something and a tasty pastry (Trust me. They’re great pastries), and have a look. Contact me if you’re interested in any pieces or have any questions!

We’ll have to go back. Museums, all this awesome scenery, gardens, fountains. Acres of things to see and do.

  • I was going to be solo for the holiday weekend, so a friend invited me last-minute on a group outing to Whistler, the site of the 2010 Winter Olympics, and a travel destination for many of my friends during the winter months. I’d never been enticed to make the drive up (it’s about 5-6 hours from Seattle). I’m not one who likes to wake at 5 a.m. to drive for hours then bundle up like the kid from A Christmas Story and then hurl myself down a treacherous mountain. I’m more of an island girl. That said, I had a wonderful time. What beautiful country! The Olympic Village was nestled just so and did not overwhelm the natural surroundings.

  • Since 2010 I’ve been participating in a fundraiser for Photographic Center Northwest called Long Shot. It’s an annual event where you take photos within a 24-hour period, submit five photos you like, and the school chooses one photo to exhibit and auction at a community event. All proceeds benefit the school. I think it’s great to have a school that can provide classes and resources for people who are experimenting with and passionate about photography. This year, I did a series of photos taken at my kitchen table. I’m not sure which one I want to leave out, but feel good about what I came up with.

  • My work is currently up at Fresh Flours on Phinney Ridge (Seattle, WA). Showing with me again is Studio Cornix with new works in her Cell Portrait series. Here’s a phone pic peak:

Left and Center Walls: Some of my abstract work
Right Wall: Photos from my travels grouped by destination.

Clockwise starting from upper-left: Studio Cornix posing with her cell portraits, photos from Paris, abstract photography, and photos from the Central California Coast. You’ll have to check them out to see them in color!
